As much as I love a good Walt Disney World® Resort vacation complete with early morning starts, fun-packed days and nighttime magic, I would be lying if I told you that it wasn’t completely exhausting. Thankfully, I know the perfect way to unwind from a whirlwind Disney vacation…another Disney vacation! At the beach, that is.
Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is just under a two-hour drive south-east from Walt Disney World Resort and is the perfect place to relax while still basking in Disney-quality service. Situated right on the Atlantic Ocean, this property overlooks a white-sand beach and beautiful turquoise water. Palm-tree and hibiscus lined walkways, a laid-back family atmosphere and, of course, a Mickey-shaped swimming pool, are all part of its appeal. Subtle Disneyesque accents remind you of where you are, but are a big step back from the ubiquitous parades and pixie dust.
Accommodations
Guests can choose from Deluxe Studios, one or two-bedroom villas or Inn Rooms with either pool or ocean views. A lucky few can even rent one of the six coveted beach cottages complete with three bedrooms, cathedral ceilings and balconies which bring you as close as you can be to the ocean without getting wet. All one and two-bedroom villas and cottages have full kitchens, washers and dryers. Deluxe Studios have kitchenettes and easy access to laundry facilities in each three-story building.
To Do
There is no shortage of family fun at this little-known Disney gem. Daily children’s programs are posted for sign-up each morning. A fun waterslide and daily pool parties keep the kiddos entertained with games, dancing and hula hoop and limbo contests. A 9-hole miniature golf course sits right off the pool area offering a shady break from the Florida sun. At the Adventurer’s Club kids get a “night out” with Disney Cast Members on-property while parents enjoy one of the dining locations at the Resort or venture out to one of the many nearby area restaurants.
Evenings are very low-keyed with twice weekly s’more roasting sing-alongs. DVD rentals from the gift shop are complimentary and the main lobby has X-Box gaming stations available. If you’re looking for nightlife other than an evening swim, corny campfire songs or a family movie back at your room or villa, you won’t find it here. Think rest and relaxation rather than fast-paced and action-packed—a sort of recovery room from your Disney Parks adventure.
Dining
Four distinctly different dining options are offered on-site. Shutters, the main restaurant, has a character breakfast on Saturdays, Sunday brunch and a fun pirate-themed dinner every Monday. Sonya’s, the Resort’s fine dining location is one of our favorites with delicious steaks and seafood plus a nice wine list. The Green Cabin Room’s outdoor patio is a perfect spot for cocktails and appetizers accompanied by a breathtaking ocean view. Bleachers Bar & Grill has lunch, drinks and snacks poolside. Pizza take-out is available just one block away, and there are dozens of off-site dining locations to choose from just a few minutes’ drive from the Resort.

It has been years since my visit to Vero Beach. I loved everything about it except that there are no lifeguards on the beach. There is a sign that warns of hazards in the water—including but not limited to sharks—and there is no lifeguard?
I agree. Lifeguards should be on the beach. I’m surprised that there are none.
